How to Use Guide: VZAccess Manager® - Installation & Setup

The VZAccess Manager provides a one-touch connection to the wireless Internet. It has built-in support for WWAN and Wi-Fi devices to give you the flexibility you need while you are mobile to connect your laptop to the Internet wirelessly.

Supported Verizon Wireless WWAN Services

VZAccess Manager supports the following Verizon Wireless WWAN services:

Mobile Broadband - This service requires a Mobile Broadband-capable wireless device and provides a wireless broadband connection to the Internet. With Mobile Broadband from Verizon Wireless in your notebook, you can access e-mail, download files, and browse the Internet at broadband speeds. For 4G Mobile Broadband, average download speeds range from 5 to 12 Mbps. For 3G Mobile Broadband, typical download speeds range from 600 kbps to 1.4 Mbps with typical upload speeds ranging from 500 kbps to 800 kbps. NationalAccess - This requires a NationalAccess capable wireless device (supporting CDMA 1xRTT). National Access delivers typical speeds of 60 to 80 Kbps, bursting up to 144 Kbps . This service requires a subscription to a National Access plan. Additional information is available at the Verizon Wireless FAQ page.
Global Data - This service requires a GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSPA-capable WWAN device and a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card. The embedded Global Data modules in certain laptop computers can fulfill this function as well. Global Data provides high-speed wireless Internet access in over 200 destinations worldwide. ²Speeds require an EV-DO Rev. A-capable device. When using an EV-DO device that is not Rev. Acapable or traveling in the Extended Broadband Rate and Services area, you can expect download speeds of 400 - 700 Kbps and upload speeds of 60 - 80 Kbps. Mobile Broadband speed claims based on our network tests with 5 MB FTP data files, without compression.
³Speed claim based on our network tests with 101 Kilobyte FTP data files. Actual throughput speed and coverage vary.

System Requirements

In order to set up VZAccess Manager, you will need the following minimum system requirements:

Hardware/Operating Systems:

- A Verizon Wireless Mobile Broadband device or Mobile Broadband Connect capable mobile phone.
  
  Note: Use of a mobile phone handset requires connection to your computer via Bluetooth or USB cable.
- An optional Wi-Fi adapter for Wi-Fi access.
Wireless Service
- A Verizon Wireless data service plan for Mobile Broadband Devices.
- A GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSPA/4G LTE device and SIM card if traveling internationally to GSM network-based countries.

Installation and Configuration

This section will guide you through the installation and setup process for the VZAccess Manager. Before getting started you should become familiar with the documentation that came with your mobile phone or PC Card.

CDs

If you purchased a Mobile Broadband device, there is only one CD that contains VZAccess Manager and wireless device drivers.
If you lose or misplace your VZAccess Manager installation CD, please visit www.vzam.net, click on Consumer Downloads and answer the questions about operating system and your device type to download the appropriate version of VZAccess Manager software.

Getting Started

Follow these steps to install VZAccess Manager:

Turn on your computer.
Insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive.
Important: Do not insert the Mobile Broadband device to your PC yet.
If set-up does not automatically start, click the "Start" button on the taskbar and choose "Run". Type D:\Start (where D is the letter of your CD-ROM drive).You will be presented with a "Welcome" screen.
Click “Install VZAccess Manager v.X.X.X from CD.”
Click the "Next" button to continue with the installation process.

The VZAccess Manager Setup Program
After the Welcome screen, you will see the VZAccess Manager License Agreements. In order to install and use this product, you must agree with the terms of both agreements. Select "I accept the terms in the license agreement" for both Smith Micro Software License Agreement and Verizon Wi-Fi License Agreement, then click the "Next" button to continue. If you do not agree with these agreements, click the "Cancel" button to exit.
After the VZAccess Manager License Agreements screen, click on the checkbox to if you like to place a VZAccess Manager shortcut to your desktop.
You are now ready to select the location on your computer where the VZAccess Manager should be installed. It is recommended that you do not modify the default destination folder. Click the "Next" button to continue.
Choose an install type. It is recommended that you choose the “Typical” Install type.
You are now ready to begin installing VZAccess Manager components onto your computer. Click "Install" to continue.
During this step the components of the VZAccess Manager are being installed onto your computer. Installation will occur to the destination folder specified in Step 8 above.
Installation is now complete. Click the "Finish" button to leave the VZAccess Manager setup program and begin using your new software.
The setup program will create a VZAccess Manager shortcut on your desktop if you selected to create a shortcut during the installation.

Using the VZAccess Manager

Click the "Start" button, select the "Programs" menu and choose the "VZAccess Manager" menu item to start the VZAccess Manager program.
On first-run of VZAccess Manager, the software will try to detect and initialize the WWAN device.
Next, VZAccess Manager will detect the available networks: Verizon Wireless network and the Wi-Fi networks.
The detection and configuration process for your wireless device is now completed. Click on the “Connect” button to establish connection with Verizon Wireless network.
On first try, a warning message of any data charge will pop up. Click on the “Don’t show this message again” checkbox if you do not wish to be warned in the future. Click on “Continue” button to proceed.
Once connected, VZAccess Manager will prompt an “Update Check”. Click on “Yes” to continue with update, or “No” to skip.
VZAcess Manager will now retrieve your data usage. Click on “Close” to continue or wait for the actual usage information to return.
