How To Use Guide: Mobile IM

Using Mobile IM with AOL® Instant Messenger™ service, Windows Live Messenger™, or Yahoo! Messenger® is as easy as it looks. It's simple, takes just a minute and is available through Get It Now® from Verizon Wireless. If you don't already have an AOL Instant Messenger, Windows Live Messenger, or Yahoo! Messenger account, you need to set one up on your computer.

Now you're ready to download the Mobile IM application directly to your phone!

How to download Mobile IM

On your Verizon Wireless Get It Now-capable phone:
  1. Go to "Get It Now" menu.
  2. Select either "Tools on the Go" or "Extras" (depending on your device).
  3. Select "Mobile IM" from the category list.
For select Blackberry, Smartphones and Palm Devices:
  1. Visit the VZStart Homepage.
  2. Click on the "IM" icon.
  3. Follow the download instructions.

Once Mobile IM is downloaded, you can access it by selecting the "Mobile IM" icon in the Get It Now section of your mobile phone.



How to set up Mobile IM

To access the instructions for setting up a particular Mobile IM client, select the appropriate link below:
  1. AOL Instant Messenger service
  2. Windows Live Messenger
  3. Yahoo! Messenger

AOL Instant Messenger service

    1. Select "AOL Instant Messenger" from the Mobile IM Title Screen.


    1. Login.

      1. Sign on using your AOL Instant Messenger screen name.
      2. After you sign on, you will be prompted to save your password. Selecting "Yes" or "Save My Password" means you won’t have to enter your name and password every time you sign on.


    1. Add a buddy

      1. Highlight either the "Online" or "Offline" category, then select "Options". If you select "Options" under the "Conversation" category, then "Add Buddy" does not show up.
      2. Under the Options menu, select "Add Buddy". Enter in the screen name.



        Buddy List® Group

        After you sign on, the screen will automatically display active conversations and any of your friends who are online, while it downloads your list. Select the "Refresh List/Refresh Buddy List" window from the Options menu at anytime to update the status of your list. The status icon will blink until your updated list is received.

  1. Conversation Window

    1. From the "Online Buddy List" group, use the up or down navigation key to highlight the Buddy to whom you want to send a message.
    2. Make sure or is highlighted and press "OK".
    3. A Conversations window will open. Type in the message using the keypad and press "SEND" on the handset to send the message.
    4. Once you send a message to your Buddy, the conversation window will be updated with the text that you sent. If your Buddy responds, this text will be displayed in the same conversation window.
